How many spots are available?

This retreat is intentionally small. There are four participant spots, with Micah and David serving as hosts and guides. Keeping the group small allows for deeper conversation, greater flexibility, and a more personal retreat experience.

Is the trip for men only?

Yes. The 2027 retreat is limited to men who serve in full-time ministry at a church or ministry organization. We are exploring additional retreat opportunities for men, women, and married couples in the future!

Will we have free time to go do our own thing?

One of the unique aspects of Eremos Acadia is that the entire retreat is intentionally designed for us to experience together. There will be plenty of opportunities for solitude, prayer, and personal reflection throughout each day, but hikes, meals, drives, and other activities will be done as a group.

What will we eat?

We'll eat breakfast together at the cabin each morning and pack sandwiches, snacks, and other food to enjoy for lunch in the park. Each evening, we'll head into Bar Harbor for dinner at a different local restaurant. We'll work hard during the day and feast at night!

What happens if it rains?

A little rain won't stop us! There are plenty of trails and activities in Acadia that are beautiful even in wet weather, and we'll always have alternate plans available when conditions require them. Weather on Mount Desert Island can change quickly, so flexibility will be part of the adventure.

Do I need to be in good shape?

You don't need to be an elite athlete, but you should be prepared to hike several miles in a day, including significant elevation gain. On some days, we may hike multiple peaks. We strongly recommend preparing in the months leading up to the retreat with regular walks, local hikes, and other activities that build your endurance.

Are the hikes dangerous?

Hiking always involves some level of risk, particularly on rocky and uneven terrain. Some of our hikes may include steep climbs, exposed sections, or challenging footing. However, we will choose routes appropriate for the group, stay on designated trails, pay attention to weather and trail conditions, and never encourage anyone to take unnecessary risks. Participants should be comfortable following instructions, knowing their limits, and taking their time when needed.

Can I drive to the retreat?

Absolutely. You are welcome to drive directly to Alcyon Retreat Center rather than flying into Maine. Because we'll travel together throughout the retreat, the cost of the group rental van is included in the retreat fee regardless of how you arrive.

What is the cell phone / electronics policy?

A significant part of Eremos Acadia is intentionally disconnecting from the noise and responsibilities of everyday life. We encourage participants to turn off notifications and remove or avoid apps that may become a distraction during the retreat. We also ask that you prepare for your absence ahead of time so that this can truly be a work-free retreat.

Let your family, coworkers, and church know that you will be largely unavailable during these five days. We recommend limiting communication home to no more than one call each evening. One reason the retreat extends through Sunday is so that you can fully step away from your normal ministry responsibilities without thinking about the sermon, worship set, Sunday services, or everything waiting for you back home.

That said, phones are welcome on the retreat. Acadia provides plenty of incredible photo opportunities, and we may use apps such as AllTrails to help navigate hikes and bike rides. The goal isn't to get rid of technology — it's to keep it from keeping us from being fully present.
