Why "Eremos"

The name comes from the Greek word used in the Gospels (ἔρημος / eremos) for the "desolate" or wilderness places Jesus withdrew to — Mark 1:35, Mark 1:45, Luke 5:16. Throughout Scripture, the wilderness was a sacred place of encounter, where God formed His people, renewed their hearts, and called them back to Himself.

That's the spirit behind this retreat: a quiet, unhurried space to pray, listen, and be renewed. A place to withdraw for a while, the way Jesus so often did.

The first cohort of something ongoing

Trip 1 is intentionally small: five days and four nights in Acadia, capped at four guest applicants, with Micah and David serving as hosts. It includes strenuous hiking, shared meals, journaling, Scripture reading, and unstructured time for reflection on calling, future ministry, and home life.

This first trip is for men in full-time ministry — but Eremos is meant to grow. Micah envisions future cohorts open to men, women, and married couples, so we think of this as the first Eremos cohort, not a permanently men-only ministry.

I serve as the Pastor of Worship and one of the priests at Christ Church Anglican in Overland Park, Kansas. I've been leading worship since the seventh grade — almost 30 years! I'm married to Ashley and we have three kids. Having grown up as a pastor's kid and spent much of my life in full-time ministry, I know how challenging ministry can be. I'm passionate about supporting pastors and others in full-time ministry because I believe healthier pastors and ministry leaders lead to healthier churches.

Acadia National Park is one of my favorite places on the planet. My wife and I first visited there on our honeymoon 20 years ago, and I've returned many times since. I love learning everything I can about the park and Mount Desert Island and helping others experience it. It's definitely a place where the more you know and the better prepared you are, the better the experience. I love sharing what I've learned over the years and helping others experience the best of Acadia.

I've served in full-time ministry for over 25 years, most of it in worship and production at LifePoint Church in Smyrna, TN. I was blessed to grow up in a Christian home, and felt a call to ministry early in life. My beautiful wife Christy and I just celebrated 30 years of marriage, and we have two adult children, both married, and by the grace of the Lord, are walking faithfully with Him.

Ministry has a way of pulling you into constant motion, and it's easy to spend years working hard without ever slowing down to rest. I don't think that's a healthy place to lead from. We're called to serve out of rest, not hurry (Mark 6:31) — to work as unto the Lord, not for the approval of people (Colossians 3:23). That's why this retreat matters so much to me. When we take real time to be with God — to rest, reflect, and give Him our full attention — we come back to ministry able to depend on His Spirit rather than our own effort.
